New Proposed Purpose Statement

Hi Everyone!

Blogging is so fun! Who knew...

Here's a new proposed purpose statement that the BOD has come up with. Let us know what you think:

With origins in the lesbian community and open to everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, the Chorus provides educational, cultural and social enrichment through its performances and activities, thereby making a positive contribution to our audiences, members and the entire community.

After posting this, I realized that it probably requires some explanation... We decided to make this change because we realized that culture changes, and that new ways of expressing and identifying ourselves come up. So rather than limit the statement to GLBTS, why not include everyone? It's not that we did not want to add in text like "straight allies". Right now nearly 50% of our chorus is made up of women that identify as straight. And, that's wonderful! We are an inclusive group for everyone, and our focus will continue to be on women's music, women's issues, and SSAA.

Brilliant!! I (personally) like it. And that takes care of the "wordiness", too.

What will this mean as far as accepting singers? Will they still have to identify as women or just be able to sing high enough? Just curious....

It means that they are not REQUIRED to be women, but that they MUST audition, be able to sing appropriately in the SSAA range, blend with the rest of the chorus, and fit in. It will be up to the AD (Artistict Director) to determine their capability to do so. The only potential male members would be contra tenors who could sing in the alto range. Chances are that these gentlemen probably wouldn't want surround themselves with women in an enviornment that is really dedicated to women's issues, community and music, though they would be welcome if they did.
